Foreword
Boundaryless Information Flow achieved through global interoperability in a secure, reliable, and timely manner
Countries and organizations are moving towards open standards. These have a highly significant role in enabling global collaboration, international exchange of products and services, strengthening regulatory requirements, realizing interoperability, facilitating market competition, channeling organizational efforts towards differentiated services based on innovation by standardizing the foundational aspects, and minimizing vendor lock-in resulting from proprietary solutions.
Since launching in 2017, The Open Group India Awards (the India Awards) has recognized organizations and teams in the South Asia, Middle East, and African regions that have reached the pinnacle of achievement in applying The Open Group standards, open-source software, and best practices in Enterprise Architecture, IT Management, Cybersecurity, and Digital Transformation. The central essence of the India Awards is aptly captured by the four Ds – namely, Digital Innovation, Delivery Reliability, Data-Driven, and Dynamic Workforce.[1]
This document is a case study derived from the submission made by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to the India Awards 2022. The India Awards provide a platform for organizations to demonstrate their experience in the adoption of the open standards developed by The Open Group. This case study documents ADNOC’s journey to Application Portfolio Management (APM) using the TOGAF® Standard, a standard of The Open Group. The aim is to infuse practical wisdom and understand how open standards are put into practice in various contexts.
Executive Summary
This document describes the details of the project experience of a major Oil & Gas company who leveraged Enterprise Architecture (EA) for Application Portfolio Management (APM). Specifically, this document will focus on:
-
The context of APM
-
The case study of the APM project executed by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), a major Oil & Gas company headquartered in the Middle East containing details about:
-
Problem statement and motivation for the project
-
EA Practice at ADNOC and the genesis of this specific project
-
Details of the project covering project and architecture activities, stakeholders and their roles, project highlights, outputs and lessons learned, applicability of the principles and techniques used in this project for larger causes beyond their organization
-
This document will be of interest to anyone who wants to learn about leveraging the EA domain for APM.
By leveraging the principles of EA and tailoring the principles of the TOGAF Architecture Development Method (ADM) framework, ADNOC was able to apply and demonstrate how architectural thinking can help in cost optimization and improvement of customer experience. In this respect, the practice of EA covered in this document supports The Open Group vision: Boundaryless Information Flow™.
